A Pound of Kindness true story

A childhood moment of kindness that Dave Clark has carried with him for a lifetime.

The true story

No one should be left behind.

First-grader Dave Clark is an active child who loves playing with his dog, Duke. After losing the use of his legs to polio as a baby, Dave wears full-length leg braces and moves through the world on crutches.

When his teacher announces a walking field trip to the local fire station, Dave does not want to be the reason the class must slow down. He quietly wonders whether he will keep up, whether he will become a burden, and whether he might be left behind.

His classmate Ernie Pound notices what others may have missed. Ernie does not see a problem. He sees his friend. With a simple Radio Flyer wagon and a caring heart, he makes sure Dave is included. That small choice becomes a memory Dave carries throughout his entire life.

You may never know the weight that a small act of kindness can have on a person's life. Dave Clark

Why this story belongs in more hands

One true story can change how people see one another.

A child may recognize their own fear of being different. A classmate may learn to notice who is standing alone. A parent, teacher, or coach may be reminded that the smallest gesture can become the moment someone remembers for the rest of their life.

01

Help a Child Notice

Young readers learn to look beyond themselves and recognize when a classmate, teammate, or friend may need encouragement or inclusion.

02

Remind an Adult

The story brings adults back to a simple truth: people may forget what we said, but they rarely forget the moment we made them feel they belonged.

03

Create a Ripple

One shared book can inspire another thoughtful choice, then another, allowing a single act of kindness to travel through an entire community.
